Ask yourself “why?"
“Why" is a powerful tool to get to know not only how things work, but also to learn things about yourself. Repeatedly interrogating yourself “why?” will unveil hidden values and motivations in you. You will peel layer by layer your reasoning and patterns. I use this method whenever I feel uncertain or seek some clarity before an impactful decision. Basically self-therapy!
Try it yourself! Start with something simple like “I feel.." or “I want..” and see how each subsequent “why?” progressively gets deeper. How each question carries more weight, making it increasingly difficult to respond.
I bet that “why?” won’t feel like a word anymore, or it will sound strange for some time after, because of semantic satiation!
Example:
I’m feeling good today. Why?
I studied a lot today, and it made me feel proud. Why?
Because I accomplished something. Why?
I have a test tomorrow, so I needed to study. Why?
I wanted to get a good grade. Why?
Because I want to have a future. Why?
I want to be able to give patients appropriate care. Why?
Everyone deserves appropriate care. Why?
Because everyone has the right to health and well-being. Why?
